    Description

Sammy Jay Vintage Pairpoint Glass Cup Plate 120
Thornton W. Burgess Society of Sandwich Massachusetts
    Made in USA
This beautiful 3.5 inch crystal Pairpoint Glass cup plate features Thornton Burgess' famous blue jay, Sammy Jay. Pairpoint plate number 120 is the 13th in the TWB series. Sammy Jay is shown parched in an oak tree. The branches and leaves of the tree extend to form the border design. There is a hint of Farmer Brown's rail fence on the horizon. The pressing for this adaptation of a Harrison Cady illustration began in 1981 and concluded in 1983. Sammy had his own book "The Adventures of Sammy Jay," which was published in 1915.
    Additional Information
Boxes and padding are included for packing protection. MainelySimpleGifts sells vintage plates and boxes may be stained, and have handwriting or labels. If you prefer a new white gift box, please send me a message.
The pictures are taken close and could show blemishes that are not necessarily seen by the naked eye. The photos that show the greatest detail generally appear a little different than the actual color.
Made in America. The Pairpoint Glass Co. of Sagamore, MA, which is on Cape Cod, is the oldest glass making company in the USA. The company is well-known for manufacturing quality crystal cup plates since the 1920's.
Pairpoint cup plates are a unique work of art. Cup plates were signed with the Pairpoint trademark and the initials/monogram of the engraver. Using traditional freehand methods, the engraver worked directly in steel using a hammer and chisel. Using an antique press that made the early cup plates, the vintage plates were pressed in 34% lead crystal.
If a cup plate does not have a Pairpoint label/sticker on it or in the box, the label was removed or the plate was not factory graded as first quality. If included, the sticker will be visible in one of the photos or I will write a notation indicating the label is in the box.
Cup plates are small, round decorative glass tea coaster-like collectibles that generally measure about
    3.5
inches in diameter and .5 inches in height. They are often used as cottagecore window sill decorations as the vintage art glass capture the sun beautifully, further accentuating the plate's intricate design & color. Other uses include:
    Butter Pats
    Wedding Favors
    Tea Party Favors
    Ring or Coin Dishes
Small Dishes for Gourmet Appetizers or Cup Cakes
Unique Glass for Stained Glass Windows or other Art Glass
    Nursery Decor
Baby Shower Gift (paired with a Thornton Burgess book)
    Stocking Stuffers
Thornton W. Burgess was the creator of Peter Rabbit and his animal friends in the Dear Old Briar Patch, the Smiling Pool, the Green Meadow and the Laughing Brook. The Thornton Burgess Society, which ran the former Burgess museum in Sandwich, Massachusetts, sold cup plates bearing the imprint of the characters to help fund the museum.
    About me as a Seller
The majority of the cup plates I sell belonged to my mother, who was a member of Cape Cod's Pairpoint Cup Plate Collectors of America (PCPCA) and the Thornton W Burgess Society. She enjoyed many of these little glass plates, and had most, if not all, of the limited editions. Each cup plate has a unique story and is a wonderful piece of art glass. Most of my TWB plates were purchased at the museum, which was located on Cape Cod in Sandwich, MA.
